More and more businesses dedicate substantial efforts in being responsible, sustainable, and mindful of future generations. But what can be done when business practices lead to significant harms to individuals and communities? How do we make it right? Rectifying these situations – what we refer to as “remedy” – is essential to demonstrating a commitment to being a force for good in society.
Access to remedy is a fundamental aspect of respecting human rights, and effective grievance mechanisms are the pathways through which remedies can be sought. Private sector actors, including ABN AMRO, have established remedy mechanisms*. However, limitations still exist for rights-holders to get access to remedy for business-related human rights abuses. How can grievance mechanisms be effective in enabling and providing remedy?
This year’s human rights conference will focus on the importance of these mechanisms and their role in providing rightsholders in supply chains with access to remedy. Roles and responsibilities of companies and financial institutions will be discussed and knowledge will be shared to help improve remedy and grievance processes. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in discussions about emerging trends, existing mechanisms, and why remedy for business-related human rights abuses is crucial.
