Webinar Deep Dive: China’s EV Strategy, Policy & Regulations

  • Date: 21/05/2025
  • Time: 11:00 - 12:00 (CET)
  • Location: Online

China plays a critical role in the global energy transition, particularly in the shift to electric vehicles (EVs). As a major global buyer and processor of raw materials, China’s policies influence not only its own EV market, but also global supply chains, sustainability standards, and the responsible sourcing of minerals such as nickel.

In this one-hour session, we will take a deep dive into China’s EV strategy, current regulatory landscape, and its broader implications for global decarbonisation, supply chain governance, and investor responsibility.

We are pleased to be joined by Wenjie Liu, East Asia Senior Strategist at The Sunrise Project, and Erlend Trebbi, Sustainable Finance Advisor at Rainforest Foundation Norway. Together, they will offer insight into recent policy developments, expectations for investors, and ESG-related challenges and opportunities in the Chinese EV market.

Programme

  • Welcome & Introduction | Freek van Til – Project Manager, Sustainability & Responsible Investment, VBDO
  • China’s EV Strategy and Sustainability Developments | Wenjie Liu – East Asia Senior Strategist, The Sunrise Project
Wenjie Liu will provide an in-depth update on China’s evolving electric vehicle strategy and its growing influence on global supply chains and sustainability standards. She will discuss recent regulatory developments, including China’s adoption of ESG reporting aligned with the ISSB, and how environmental, social, and human rights considerations are increasingly being embedded into national policies. The session will also explore the implications of China’s expanding presence in Europe—through companies like BYD and Geely. Drawing from her experience at The Sunrise Project, Wenjie will highlight the connection between downstream developments in China and upstream sourcing in regions like Indonesia, offering practical insights into company performance and opportunities for investor engagement. Her presentation will be followed by an interactive discussion.
  • China and ESG: Insights from Rainforest Foundation Norway | Erlend Trebbi – Sustainable Finance Advisor, Rainforest Foundation Norway
Erlend will share lessons from RFN’s engagement in China around ESG risks, climate commitments, deforestation, and corporate due diligence. His talk will highlight opportunities for the financial sector to engage with Chinese companies and regulators on responsible supply chain practices.
